"Your voice, your eyes," Paul Eluard

Anna Karina, from Godard's Alphaville

Your voice, your eyes
your hands, your lips
Our silences, our words
Light that goes
light that returns
A single smile between us both

In quest of knowledge
I watched night create day
while we seemed unchanged
beloved of all, beloved of one alone
your mouth silently promised to be happy
Away, away, says hate
never, never, says love
A caress leads us from our childhood
Increasingly I see the human form
as a lover’s dialogue
The heart has but one mouth
Everything ordered by chance
All words without aforethought
Sentiments adrift
Men roam the city
A glance, a word
Because I love you
Everything moves
To live, only advance!
Aim straight for those you love
I went towards you, endlessly towards the light
If you smile, it is to enfold me all the better
The rays of your arms pierce the mist

  1. I like the description of the subject's features. I can imagine the mouth, the smile, and the eyes described in the poem. And while I don't quite understand what the meaning of it is, I like the emphasis created by the repetition of the words beloved, away, and never in lines 10-13.

  2. The beginning of this poem is a little slow, for me. But as it progresses, I really enjoyed the lines about hate pushing love away but love is relentless. And then about going straight to your love. I think it has a good meaning, the poem. To me it's saying to never give up on love and make that your main goal in life, because that's what is most important.

  3. I think that the poet in this poem, is stating how her love will never being broken. Also, she talks about how night creates day, and this could just be a reference to time passing, and she then states how they are unchanged. the part where they are unchanged is referring to how their love will withstand time.

  4. I really like the imagery Karina employs to characterize the love the speaker feels for a man. I feel like intensifies and validates her feelings, and by saying things like a "a single smile between us both," Karina conveys the couple's love as natural and simple; something that was meant to be.

  5. This poem uses lots of imagery. As I kept reading I could picture it more and more. "A single smile between us both" and "men roam the city" are parts where I could picture the scene greatly.

  6. I really like this poem. I like how the author says the heart only has one mouth, meaning you should follow what your heart wants-at least that's what it meant to me. I also liked how it said "everything ordered by change". A lot of us don't like change and think that change is always a bad thing, but this reminds us that everything gets straightened out through change.

  7. I think it's really cute how the poem starts as a love poem but then moves into a sketchy story. At the end, the poem leaves me wanting more. It feel unfinished.

  8. I really enjoyed listening to this poem and then later watching the movie clip that goes with it. The repetition of the word "your" in the beginning of the poem added to the poems uniqueness. I feel as if this poem is describing a hate love relationship between the couple, lines such as "Away, away, says hate
never, never, says love" lead me to this conclusion.

  9. The way that the author describes everything in the poem really is very interesting. The beginning of the poem seems like it's about a rocky relationship-or one that is up and down all the time I guess. And then it starts giving love advice I think haha. I'm not sure, but that's defenetly what I felt like. For example, it says, "Aim straight for those you love." This poem is kindof weird but I like it. It's basically talking about this girl and his relationship with her but then ends up writing about following your heart and seeking those you love.
