"Song of the Builders," Mary Oliver

Song of the Builders

On a summer morning
I sat down
on a hillside
to think about God -

a worthy pastime.
Near me, I saw
a single cricket;
it was moving the grains of the hillside

this way and that way.
How great was its energy,
how humble its effort.
Let us hope

it will always be like this,
each of us going on
in our inexplicable ways
building the universe.

  1. I really like this poem. The message is clear, and it is easy to comprehend. We get so caught up in the world that we forget our place. It's almost as if the poem says that it is wrong to think that you're anything more than a humble cricket doing its job.

  2. This poem really speaks. It seems as if the author is really chill at the moment, just observing nature. This is something we should all do once in a while, it is quite beautiful. I personally find more interest in looking at the sky and the stars rather than a cricket, but the principle is the same.
