Tuesday's Poem: "Once Upon a Time"

Comments here. The poem should be in your poetry journals.

Why no chords? Why the white keys? Why the Mediterranean?

  1. I like how in this poem Jack Gilbert uses the word we a lot. It shows a possesion that he feels he has over everything. To me it is about new love and how it can not feel weird at times but its natural. There are probably not chords because love isn't perfect and chords are meant to sound really good and perfect. I think it is in the Mediterranean because it is a warm place and everyone likes a warm place. Love is warm just like the Mediterranean something you want to snuggle up to.

  2. I love this poem. I especially loved reading it as well. Pacing oneself, such as when reading a poem, is a great mental exercise it seems; it keeps you in the moment. The poem gave me an image a 16-year old boy, sheepish and awkward, being faced with an opportunity for sex, (bluntly put). It's passionate, affectionate and still retains its hue of innocence. 8/10

  3. This poem was a pretty good. I liked the last three lines the most. They really got to me. I love they way he put that "Sometimes" they volunteered to to kiss back. I also loved how he talked bout music because music is one of the main things in my life. I really enjoyed listening && reading this poem because it relates to me a little bit!!!

Does this poem relate to your life or just simply relate to your thoughts??

  4. I Think Gilbert left out chords because in music, chords are meant to make music sound better. But with love, it's not perfect. The ups and downs of a relationship is what keeps that spark going, and I think that might be what he is talking about.

  5. The White keys are the keys of a piano. A chord In a song makes it sound better. They are a young couple experiencing new love so it will go probably one not at a time, but then as they get further into the story it will probably turn into chords. So in this way I viewed this story like reading music. the further you get in the story the better it sounds.

  6. I liked Jack Gilberts reference to music through out the poem. I feel like he was relating the piano and music to their youthful innocence. The poem was good and very mellow. I loved it!

  7. This poem is talking about young people thinking they're in love. So many people fall into the trap of thinking they are so in love with another person. When he says "we thought excitement was love, that intensity was a marriage," he is relating to the fact that many people think they are in love because they are having fun or full of excitement. By using young people to talk about love, Gilbert is hinting at the fact that love is not always just a feeling that you have. It has to be more than that sometimes and teenagers are very susceptible to "accidentally" or "incidentally," "stumbling" into something they think is love.

  8. This poem is a pretty great example of the way some high school students view love as. They think it will be perfect and exciting. They think they will always be together. But it is apparent that these young individuals still have a lot to learn about in life. Nothing is completely perfect, and they need more experience. I believe the author used the Mediterranean in the poem because it is a large body of water. It seems like a romantic thing to think about, "the sun came out of the Mediterranean, fresh every morning". Maybe people just view water and the beach as a romantic place to relax and have fun?

  9. I really liked this poem. I also really liked how you picked to read it the day after valentines day. One of my favorite parts of the poem is when they talk about the white keys. I think i really like that part just because i used to play the piano for 4 years. I also really liked the part about the mediterranean because it is a beautiful place. I'm glad he used to mediterranean instead of a lake or river or somthing because the mediterranean is much more beautiful.

  10. I really like this poem too. I think Gilbert chose white keys because, and this could be wrong because I don't play the paino, when you learn to play the piano the white keys are used for simple songs like Happy Birthday. Their lives were simple and easy. Like it shows later in the poem when he writes they were baffled when "they let us kiss their tender mouths." The small things made them speechless.
