"For My Daughter," Daivd Ignatow

When I die choose a star
and name it after me
that you may know
I have not abandoned
or forgotten you.
You were such a star to me,
following you through birth
and childhood, my hand
in your hand.

When I die
choose a star and name it
after me so that I may shine
down on you, until you join
me in darkness and silence
together.

  1. This is both a sweet poem, and a sad poem. It's sweet because the father is telling his daughter that when he dies, he will become a star that will look after and shine down on her. And that they will be together again when she dies and joins him. It's sad because, well, no one wants to think about their father dying and leaving them. I really like this poem though :)

  2. This poem truly speaks out. The reference to the star and what it means symbolically really represents the true love this author has for his loved ones. A star will always shine and will always be there watching over the family, and i really like the comparison there.
