Someone spoke to me last night,
told me the truth. Just a few words,
but I recognized it.
I knew I should make myself get up,
write it down, but it was late,
and I was exhausted from working
all day in the garden, moving rocks.
Now, I remember only the flavor —
not like food, sweet or sharp.
More like a fine powder, like dust.
And I wasn’t elated or frightened,
but simply rapt, aware.
That’s how it is sometimes —
God comes to your window,
all bright light and black wings,
and you’re just too tired to open it.
This poem states that God is coming the window and that they are too tired to open it. It makes me think if it is inferring that God is coming into the speakers life and they are avoiding it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with DragonNighthawk where he said that the speaker is avoiding God. Dorianne might be inferring in her poem that we are given many chances to get closer to God but do not take them. When she says "you're just too tired to open it," the author could be expressing that the right choices are presented to the person, but when it happens they don't choose them. This poem is very interesting with allot of meaning in it.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with dragon nighthawk i also think that god is the dust but i think think that it is showing that god is small in some peoples life and is often looked over.
ReplyDeleteI think this poem describes a lot of people who try hard to stay strong in their religion, but fail. I like the poet's honesty that sometimes we're just too "exhausted" to get up and talk or listen to God. Instead of making up excuses the poet states it plain and simple that she is just too lazy to let God in.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is poem is talking about how the working man is too tired to let God in. The poet has been working hard outside, moving rocks and working in the garden. The exhaustion he is experiencing has caused him not to write down, or remember the truth and also he was too tired to let God in.
ReplyDeleteI like how this poem is vague. Using the word "truth," shows that everyone knows a "truth."
ReplyDeleteAfter I read the poem the first time, I immediately assumed that the poet is discussing a dream they had. It's like how when you first wake up from a dream you can remember every detail, but with each passing moment you grow more and more forgetful. With the ending lines, the author states that "God comes to your window... and you're just too tired to open it." To that I say, amen. Everyone has been in the situation where they know exactly what the right thing to do is, they just choose to do differently. I think that's exactly what Dorianne Lux is talking about.
ReplyDeletewow i love this poem! It makes me sad reading it and thinking about it but I didn't even hage to think about what it means because I felt like this poem was really clear and easy to understand. I know everyone is saying that they think it is God but I dont think so. Honestly I think it's just someone talking to him possibly telling him something that he already knows but doesn't want to hear because he's avoiding it maybe. But at the end the author says, "That's how it is sometimes...." writing about how God will come and want to tell you the truth but you wont open the window for him. So maybe this person knows that whoever is whispering the truth is infact whispering the truth which is exactly why they wont open the window.
