[love is more thicker than forget], e.e. cummings

[love is more thicker than forget]

by E. E. Cummings

love is more thicker than forget
more thinner than recall
more seldom than a wave is wet
more frequent than to fail

it is more mad and moonly
and less it shall unbe
than all the sea which only
is deeper than the sea

love is less always than to win
less never than alive
less bigger than the least begin
less littler than forgive

it is most sane and sunly
and more it cannot die
than all the sky which only
is higher than the sky

  1. The first thing I noticed about this poem is the unusual grammar. There are no punctuation marks, and no capital letters. The other thing I notice is that each line is opposite to the line before it. For example line 1 uses more thicker while line 2 uses thinner. Line 3 uses seldom while line 4 uses frequent, and so forth. This type of writing really makes the reader stop and think about what the author is trying to say. It is quite effective in its delivery.

  2. To be honest, I don't understand this poem. The beginning is clear to me, in fact I like the comparisons he uses: love is thicker than forget. When you forget something it's like a wall goes in front of it. Love is thicker than that wall. But as the poem goes on, I don't understand the comparisons. Love is less always than to win? I don't get what the poet is saying. I think he's saying that love is greater than everything else in this world, but I'm confused on the delivery of how he does it.
