"Things," by Liesl Mueller.

  1. What does this process of naming say about us?

Why do you think Mueller ends with the image of the cave? What is this business about "safety"?

What kinds of bodies do these objects have? Why do you think they are described that way?

  2. I think Mueller ends with a cave because when most of us think first humans, we think cavemen in caves. They provided the cavemen with safety.

  3. I think people personify and anthropomorphize things so they don't feel alone. I think, even though we may have other people around us, that childhood tendency to create imaginary friends never leaves the back of our minds.

  4. I think that people name objects in order to personify them and feel more comfortable with them. Maybe someone is having a hard time in their life and they feel alone.
